Understanding the Diversity Policy of the United States Government

This publication provides the arguments juxtaposing traditional perspectives, issues, and rationales for policy changes in the diversity arena. It also discusses why a uniform Federal diversity policy has been so difficult to formulate given political influences and misunderstandings fueled by rhetoric and bias. The publication includes two case studies and simulations which further assist readers navigation through the complexities associated with diversity policy. The first case study demonstrates the complexities of developing a uniform diversity policy for the Federal Government using the history of the Native American experience as its basis and illustrates how the Native American experience validates the cause-and-effect relationship in the ongoing debate over Federal diversity policy. The second case study demonstrates how analyzing and implementing new approaches to mitigate environmental and health risk in low-income populations due to industrial expansion is relevant to the Federal Government’s diversity policy. Finally, recruiting and training a diverse Federal workforce, the politics of diversity, immigration, and the intersection between diversity policy and the law are major focuses of the book. Read more
